Man Utd boss Solskjaer assures matchwinner Rashford: Zico, Maradona also missedby Paul Vegasa month agoSend to a friendShare the loveManchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was happy for matchwinner Marcus Rashford after victory over Leicester City. The England international was under pressure taking the early spotkick. But having missed his previous penalty against Crystal Palace, Rashford converted for the only goal of the game. It was a relief for Rashford and his teammates, with United having missed two of their previous four penalties won this season. However, despite the outside pressure, Solskjaer insists there was never any extra demands coming from him for United’s No10.After the victory, Solskjaer told VG: “Every striker has been penalised. I’ve seen Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi miss. Michel Platini and Zico, my favourite player of all time, missed in the same match.”You just have to have enough confidence to take it again next time. What is the worst that can happen?”Victory over Leicester has United now sitting in fourth place on eight points after five games. It marked United’s first win since the opening day thumping of Chelsea.Solskjaer was also asked by reporters from the Norwegian outlet about Rashford’s performance. The United manager admitted he was delighted with the player’s commitment against a very competitive Leicester City.On Rashford’s form, Solskjaer continued: “He offers something to the team. He knows we didn’t give him enough opportunities to run through their back line. He’s getting more mature. He knows it’s not just about goals.”Today it was all about teaming up, we had to defend, and it was good to see that we were able to defend ourselves from deep without conceding any chances.”- updated September 16 About the authorPaul VegasShare the loveHave your say

Ohio State received its 2014 National Championship rings earlier today, and the Buckeyes began showing them off online. The Twitter account for ESPN’s SportsCenter used OSU wide receivers coach Zach Smith’s ring picture in a tweet, and cited the assistant in the process. A Michigan fan on Twitter responded to the tweet by acknowledging that this is the Buckeyes’ eighth claimed national championship, while the Wolverines claim 11 over their program’s history. @LeadFoot_Lads82 @SportsCenter @CoachZachSmith @DMike94 WOAH DUDE ONLY 3 MORE TO MATCH MICHIGAN.— Us Against The World (@MichiganTorei) March 27, 2015Smith was tagged in the Michigan fan’s response tweet, and decided to come up with a comeback of his own, rather than stay silent. During that time frame, Ohio State has four more titles than Michigan, because the Maize and Blue claim a handful of championships from the turn of the 20th century. Good that we have six points more than other teams but that is pretty much what we wanted to do all the time, create a basis for the rest of the season. “Now the first part of the season is over. We want to create our own history so the first time in the Premier League unbeaten, we conceded seven goals, that is good. “Numbers good, good situation, but 19 games to go.”The year prior to Liverpool’s last title victory provided the greatest end to a top-flight season in recent memory, when Arsenal won 2-0 at Anfield to claim the First Division title .While Emery’s side do not arrive on Merseyside in the type of rude health enjoyed by George Graham’s side nearly 30 years ago, they have the tools to cause an upset even if their early season form has not been sustained.”It is a very big match for us and them. Manchester City winger Leroy Sane concedes he is “not nearly” at the level of Ryan Giggs despite drawing comparisons to the Manchester United legend. The Germany international is considered to be most of the most destructive wide-men in the Premier League.Giggs once held a similar reputation during his time in Manchester, with the Welshman enjoying a trophy-laden career at Old Trafford. As Sane boasts many similar attributes to the Red Devils icon, it has been easy for his game to be likened to that of a figure from the past. The 23-year-old City star is flattered to be earning such praise, but claims it is far too early for him to be placed into a talent bracket alongside an all-time great.Sane said of the Giggs talk: “Comparing him to me – I can’t do it at all! “If you see the kind of player he was, he’s a legend for Manchester United and the Premier League. “How he played was special and how many titles he won, I’m not nearly there! “Obviously, I’m pleased that people do it because it means I’m doing some things well and I’m really happy about it.”Sane contributed 10 goals and 15 assists to City’s record-breaking title triumph in 2017-18.He has found the target a further eight times this term, while teeing up nine efforts for grateful team-mates.That contribution has Pep Guardiola’s side in contention to defend their English top-flight crown, with the Blues enjoying the challenge of trying to chase down Liverpool after securing domestic dominance at a canter last season.Sane said: “I think it’s kind of more enjoyable because it motivates you to say we want to be first, we can put pressure on them and it makes you want to work harder.“Liverpool have a lot of players with a lot of experience. Even last season, they reached the Champions League final so they know how to do it. “We all know what we did last season, we’re still doing it this season and we all know exactly what we have to do and that’s the important thing.” City sit four points adrift of Liverpool at present but can close that gap on Tuesday when they travel to Newcastle, with the Reds not in action until Wednesday evening when they play host to Leicester.

Former Juventus defender Antonio Cabrini feels Cristiano Ronaldo is a better player than Lionel Messi because the Portugal star has proven to be a real leader both on and off the pitch.Ronaldo and Messi have won 10 Ballon d’Or trophies among them since 2008, dominating the footballing landscape for over a decade.Whereas Messi has yet to lift silverware with Argentina, however, Ronaldo led Portugal to European Championship glory in France in 2016. Cabrini has nothing but respect for the iconic duo following their impressive achievements, yet feels the Juventus ace’s leadership exploits put him ahead of his eternal rival.”Ronaldo is probably the best player in the world,” Cabrini told reporters including Goal at a Betfair event at Allianz Stadium.”Obviously the focus in football over the last 10 years has been on the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo. “My personal opinion is that Ronaldo is better than Messi, but mainly in terms of leadership. Ronaldo has proven himself to be a real leader on a lot of occasions and not just on the pitch. He is a leader in his life as well as in sports.”So with all due respect to Messi, there have been a few instances in his career that he came up short.”That being said, we are speaking about two great players, I think we can all agree on that.”Although Ronaldo was unable to deliver Champions League glory in 2018-19, Juventus did manage to clinch their eighth consecutive Serie A title and Cabrini believes they are on another level than all their domestic rivals.”Whether it’s the transfer market or commercial activities, Juventus always plan ahead,” Cabrini added.”That’s the reason they are ahead of their rivals. When the other Italian teams start their transfer activity, Juventus have already completed the two or three key men they wanted to in that window.”Another example is that Juventus are the first big team in Italy to own its own stadium. They all speak about it but nobody else has started to build their own home.”As official betting partner of Juventus, Betfair invited fans from the UK and Italy to play in a tournament at the Allianz stadium. The UK fans won a place on the trip by testing their Juve knowledge in a quiz named ‘beat the elite’ where they had to better the score of the Juventus players to qualify.

Despite becoming a prolific goal scorer for Australia in recent years, Kerr had been unable to find the back of the net in her previous two World Cup campaigns but was always likely to break that drought in France. The 25-year-old looked dangerous from the outset against Italy and though her penalty left something to be desired, her follow-up and celebration has left a whole nation cheering for joy.

Match Preview After a turbulent group stage, the Matildas must avoid any hiccups against Norway if they are to secure their place in the World Cup quarter-finals for a fourth straight time.Australia have been far from convincing in France with a shock loss to Italy followed up by a fortunate comeback against Brazil and a solid victory over Jamaica. Though defensively frail without a clean sheet in their past five games, the Matildas look to ready to fire in attack with star forward Sam Kerr bagging all four goals in Australia’s final group match. Despite being ranked 12th in the world heading into France, Norway know what it takes to succeed on the biggest stage, having won the 1995 World Cup, and also picked up gold at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Their performances at the tournament to-date have been solid, with Martin Sjogren’s side holding their own in a narrow 2-1 loss to France in the group stages.Norway are without their best player and Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg at the tournament with the star absent through protest of how her football federation continues to treat female footballers. These two nations last faced off early last year with the Matildas claiming a late 4-3 win at the Algarve Cup in Poland. Norway also fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Australia’s neighbours New Zealand heading into the World Cup and on paper may struggle to contain the green and gold.

Match Preview Unai Emery’s second season with Arsenal begins in earnest with a trip to Newcastle in the Premier League on Sunday. The Gunners had a satisfactory first campaign with the former Paris Saint-Germain boss in charge, though they missed out on the Champions League, something they will be eager to rectify between now and May.While the summer addition of Nicolas Pepe seemed to set the Emirates side up for a thrilling all-out-attack approach this season, Emery subsequently moved to secure the signings of defenders David Luiz and Kieran Tierney over the final hours of the transfer window, suggesting that some effort will be made to shore up an area that has long been considered an Achilles heel for the team. With both ends of the field strengthened, the Gunners will hope to return to Europe’s top table in little over 12 months, having narrowly missed out last time around by finishing fifth in the league last term and failing to overcome Chelsea in the Europa League final.“Our ambition is to do the best possible in the all the competitions, the most important of these is the Premier League,” Emery said. “Our first target is to be in the top four, we reduced the distance last season. Manchester City and Liverpool are stronger than the others at the beginning. “We want to compete with them and reduced the points gap. Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea have the same objectives. “Last year the difference was really small and the challenge now is for us to achieve a top-four finish.“Other teams are coming back, signing new players and working very well. The Premier League is the best competition in the world. We are going to work to compete and get into the top four.”Newcastle, meanwhile, are coming off the back of a complicated summer that saw Rafael Benitez depart at the end of his contract. While speculation whirled for weeks, it was ultimately Steve Bruce who was the man anointed to replace the ex Real Madrid boss. There has been scepticism over the appointment, but the Magpies turned in a strong display against Saint-Etienne in a friendly victory last weekend.“Hopefully, I’ll win those supporters who are still in doubt over,” Bruce said on Friday. “Over a period of time, hopefully, I’ll get that sort of respect they have for Rafa. Deep down I know the fans will get behind the team. You can feel a little mood swing already.”A positive result against the Gunners would only hasten that progress. (Photo by Tom Pennington/Getty Images)Ohio State and Nebraska are a couple of hours away from kickoff at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Today’s matchup between the Buckeyes and the Huskers should be an interesting one.Urban Meyer’s Ohio State team is coming off one of its worst losses in years, as the Buckeyes were blown out by Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. in Week 8. Ohio State had a bye the following week, giving the team’s coaches and players extra time to think over that terrible defeat.Nebraska, meanwhile, is starting to play well under Scott Frost. While the Huskers have just two wins on the season, there’s a sense of optimism growing in Lincoln, Nebraska. Frost’s offense is starting to put up some serious points and the defense has looked decent today.Unfortunately for Frost and Co., they are probably catching Ohio State at the worst possible time. The Buckeyes will be out for blood this afternoon, wanting to prove to everyone that the Purdue loss was a fluke and that they’re still a College Football Playoff team.Frost knows this, telling reporters that he knows it’s not an ideal time to be playing Ohio State in Columbus. Still, he’s excited to see what his team can do on the road against a top opponent.ESPN isn’t very confident in Nebraska, though. The Worldwide Leader’s computer model likes Ohio State in this one – big.ESPN’s Football Power Index is giving Ohio State a 95.6 percent chance to win this game today, giving Nebraska just a 4.4 percent chance at an upset. Can Nebraska defeat the odds in a major way? We’ll find out soon.Ohio State and Nebraska are set to kick off at noon E.T. The game will be on FOX.
SANTA CLARA, CA – JANUARY 07: Head coach Dabo Swinney of the Clemson Tigers looks on during warm ups prior to the CFP National Championship against the Alabama Crimson Tide presented by AT&T at Levi’s Stadium on January 7, 2019 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)During the Clemson Tigers’ celebratory trip to the White House, Dabo Swinney went the extra mile in his speech by showing appreciation and respect to one of the most influential figures in sports. From the moment ESPN aired Tyler Trent’s inspiring story, the entire sports world rallied around the Purdue student. In fact, the Boilermakers’ upset victory over the Ohio State Buckeyes was easily one of the memorable games of the season.Trent touched the hearts of so many people in such a small amount of time. His incredible toughness and ability to show gratitude each day in his life was truly an inspiration to us all.Although he unfortunately passed away earlier this month, Swinney made sure to share this significant moment by quoting Trent’s words when he took the podium.Instead of using his time to solely talk about his team’s performance, the Clemson head coach turned his speech into a life lesson for those that listened.“Though I am in hospice care and have to wake up every morning knowing that the day might be my last, I still have a choice to make, to make that day the best it can be. Yet, isn’t that a choice we all have every day? After all, nobody knows the amount of days we have left. Some could say we are all in hospice to a certain degree. So why don’t we act like it.”Here is the full video:Dabo Swinney quoted the late @BoilerFootball super fan Tyler Trent while speaking at the White House today ? pic.twitter.com/pXhElpCwTl— ESPN (@espn) January 15, 2019This was an extremely classy move by Swinney, who seemingly always takes the right approach to every moment. It’s clear that Trent’s spirit will continue to live on for many in college football.
(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)One of college football’s best quarterback from the 2017 and 2018 seasons is having a rough week so far at the Senior Bowl. Former West Virginia star Will Grier entered the 2018 season as a potential first-round pick. After throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 37 touchdowns, it looked like Grier solidified his status as one of the top quarterbacks in the 2019 draft class. However, after skipping his team’s bowl game and struggling during practice sessions at it appears his stock is falling. On Saturday afternoon, Grier was on the field once again for the Senior Bowl and he struggled to find a rhythm in the early going. His first quarter performance was quantified as a “dumpster fire” by one analyst. Will Grier has been a dumpster fire out here. It’s amazing they actually keep moving the ball via runs and penalties. Grier has thrown two, TWO passes that you could even call “competent” and they were both short slants. Every other ball had a negative grade. Some severely so.— Chris Kouffman (@ckparrot) January 26, 2019Another analyst talked about the “Will Grier Experience” as a white knuckle ride from start to finish. The Will Grier Experience will have you white knuckled from start to finish.— Kyle Crabbs (@GrindingTheTape) January 26, 2019Despite lighting up the college football world in his final two seasons with the West Virginia Mountaineers, Grier’s draft stock appears to be tumbling as he struggles to connect with his receivers at the Senior Bowl.Grier will have another opportunity to prove he’s a capable quarterback during West Virginia’s pro day and at the NFL combine in mid-February.The NFL draft kicks off on April 25 and runs through the weekend.

Not surprisingly, California, Texas, Florida and Georgia were the heavyweights in terms of where the top high school talent plays.According to SB Nation, California and Texas both produced 48 blue chip (four and five star) recruits. While those two states produce a large amount of talent, there are schools on the other side of the spectrum. In fact, 12 states did not produce a single blue chip recruit.Alaska, Idaho, Maine, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming all did not have a four or five star recruit from their ranks.California, Texas, Georgia and Florida combine for 47.5-percent of the country’s blue chip recruits. It’s easy to see why Kirby Smart and company have done a great job recruiting over the past few seasons. You can see a full breakdown of the blue chip recruits here.

WEST LAFAYETTE, IN – SEPTEMBER 08: Tario Fuller #25 of the Purdue Boilermakers runs the ball during a game against the Ohio Bobcats at Ross-Ade Stadium on September 8, 2017 in West Lafayette, Indiana. Purdue won 44-21. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)Tario Fuller was the likely starter at running back for Purdue heading into fall. He’s dealt with injuries throughout his career, which began back in 2015, and another has apparently reared its ugly head. The fifth-year senior has 67 rushes through three seasons with Purdue. His 82 total touches for 458 yards and two touchdowns make him the most experienced option at the position for Jeff Brohm this fall.Unfortunately, he went down once again today, during the Boilermakers’ scrimmage. It is unclear the nature or extent of his injury, but Brohm called it “significant.”From the Journal & Courier:Coach Jeff Brohm said fifth-year running back Tario Fuller sustained a “significant” injury during the scrimmage, which began outside but was moved indoors because of threatening weather. Brohm said the injury happened during a special teams period. The loss of Fuller, who is battling with Zander Horvath for the No. 1 spot, would impact the offense and remove a player from the lineup who has shown explosiveness and big-play ability.“Tario got hurt today and we’ll see the extent of it. He may be out a while,” Brohm said. “It makes that position thinner and makes the young freshmen have to step in and play.”Horvath, a redshirt sophomore, got a bit of action for the first time last season. He carried the ball nine times for 42 yards and a touchdown, and caught four passes for 38 yards. The other options at the position are freshmen Da’Joun Hewitt and King Doerue, and walk-on Alfred Armour.Fuller has had surgeries on his ankle, to repair a torn labrum, and on a sports hernia between 2017 and 2018. He’s played in just 13 games in three years as an active member of Purdue’s program. Hopefully, this injury isn’t as serious as it seems, and he can get back this season.[Journal & Courier]
BEVERLY HILLS, CA – AUGUST 07: Reggie Bush, Joel Klatt and Kevin Burkhardt of Fox Sports speak during the Fox segment of the 2019 Summer TCA Press Tour at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on August 7, 2019 in Beverly Hills, California. (Photo by Amy Sussman/Getty Images) *** Reggie Bush; Joel Klatt; Kevin BurkhardtAfter each week of college football, Fox Sports’ Joel Klatt releases his top 10 teams. This past weekend of football featured some exciting games, but not many which swayed the rankings too much. Klatt’s new ranking did shift a bit though.LSU sees the biggest jump going from No. 7 to No. 3. Michigan, which was No. 5 in Klatt’s ranking last week, is now not ranked in the top 10 after a sub-par performance against Army. The most questionable inclusion in Klatt’s top 10 is Texas. The Longhorns, at home, lost to LSU on Saturday night. In the AP poll, UT dropped to No. 12. But in Klatt’s ranking, Texas only dropped two spots to No. 8. At this point in the season, it seems there are other teams more deserving of a top 10 spot. Here’s Klatt’s full ranking. My CFB Top 10 for Week 31 @ClemsonFB 2 @AlabamaFTBL 3 @LSUfootball 4 @GeorgiaFootball 5 @OU_Football 6 @OhioStateFB 7 @BadgerFootball 8 @TexasFootball 9 @NDFootball 10 @Utah_Football— Joel Klatt (@joelklatt) September 9, 2019To no one’s surprise, Clemson and Alabama are first and second respectively. Three of Klatt’s top four teams hail from the SEC.Right behind Ohio State is Wisconsin at No. 7. The Badgers weren’t included in Klatt’s top 10 last week. Coming off a 61-0 win over Central Michigan, Wisconsin looks legit and like they belong in the top 10.Utah is the only Pac-12 school included in the top 10. The Utes were No. 10 last week as well.Agree with Klatt’s top 10?
