To get to venues safely and on time, the Halifax 2011 Canada Games host society encourages volunteers and spectators to plan ahead before travelling to the various sport and cultural events around Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) and two nearby ski hills. Carpooling and using public transportation when possible is recommended as parking at Games venues is limited. Winter weather conditions can also affect travel times, so people should allow plenty of time to get to and from destinations. The host society, in partnership with the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, advises motorists of temporary parking restrictions during the Games. Parking exclusions and road closures will be in effect on streets around key Games venues in central HRM, including the athletes’ village, the Canada Games Oval and Saint Mary’s University. Parking will also be restricted along Ski Martock Road and on either side of the Ski Martock entrance along Trunk 14 as well as along Trunk 4 on either side of the Ski Wentworth entrance. Drivers are asked to proceed with caution along the designated routes and respect the no parking signs. The no parking signs will help police and Games organizers provide access to venue sites for emergency responders, manage traffic flow and ensure the safety of those attending the games and travelling along those routes. The parking restrictions will be strictly enforced and vehicles parked in the restricted area will be ticketed and towed. Regular Metro Transit routes provide service to the 11 Games venues in HRM. Games volunteers wearing accreditation badges between Feb. 10-27, and spectators who show their full Games pass from Feb. 11-27, can ride buses and ferries for free during the Games. Ski hill volunteers can take advantage of free park-and-ride services. Ski Martock volunteers can park at the Windsor Exhibition Park, where a shuttle will arrive about every 40 minutes. A shuttle will arrive at the LeFarge Quarry every 30 minutes to pick up Ski Wentworth volunteers parked there. Volunteers must be wearing their accreditation badge to get on the shuttle.
