Employers can show holiday sensitivity

first_img To allay concerns about the expense, she suggests telling employees, “we don’t know what’s coming next, but we do have something that we can celebrate.” Still, it’s probably a good idea to downscale the partying. Having a potluck party, with staffers bringing homemade dishes, can help strengthen bonds among your employees as they enjoy the fruits of each other’s culinary skills. But if you’re already financially committed to a more expensive affair, for example, at a restaurant, explain that to your employees. Whatever you do, Vernon said, “make it as fun as possible so you’re focusing on what the new year has to bring.” Galante, however, advised against holiday celebrations. “I wouldn’t have a company party,” she said. “You have to be in keeping with your message if times are lean.” The problem, Galante said, is that employees might be angry about the fact that the money you spent on a party could have gone into their paychecks instead. “People will be saying, rather than throwing a shindig, I would rather have the $40 or $50 you spent on me,” Galante said. Still, she noted, some employees will be upset that there is no party. “Talk to your folks so they understand and they don’t see it as you being cheap, so they see it as you doing what’s in the best interest of the company – so they all can keep their jobs,” she said. Vernon suggested talking to the staffers and see whether they’d like to have a celebration, and what kind. “They can poll the employees,” she said of business owners. “Involve the employees in every step – without making it feel like it’s a burden on them.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. NEW YORK – With news of plant closings and layoffs appearing almost daily in the news media, this isn’t the happiest of holiday seasons for many companies – even if they’re not suffering job cuts or otherwise struggling, their customers or vendors might be. And so company owners need to be sensitive to employees’ feelings during what may be a more uncertain than cheerful holiday. Human resources consultants say it’s critical for owners to be upfront with employees anytime there are problems in the business, whether it’s during the holidays or any other time of the year. Fran Galante, executive director of Managed Care Concepts, a Boca Raton, Fla.-based employee assistance program provider, says dealing with an unhappy holiday season falls into the category of change management. Change management means helping your employees cope with the pain or uncertainty of difficult times, and it also means keeping the lines of communication open, meeting with staffers and answering their questions. Galante noted that this holiday season could be particularly hard for companies affected directly or indirectly by this year’s hurricanes. And the total impact from Katrina, Rita and Wilma on these businesses may not yet be known. AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORERose Parade grand marshal Rita Moreno talks New Year’s Day outfit and ‘West Side Story’ remake She said she tells her clients to meet with staffers and “have open communication to the point where they (employees) are comfortable.” However, Galante said, that doesn’t mean you need to reveal every last bit of information about your company’s situation. She also advises talking to employees in an orderly fashion – don’t tell a few staffers, and not tell others. The grapevine will kick in, and “your message will not only get lost but be convoluted,” Galante said. And you’ll probably end up creating rather than alleviating anxiety. A question each business owner must also deal with is whether to celebrate the holidays – or hold a summertime picnic or similar celebration at other points in the year – when times are bad. If you spend money on a party, even a modest one, some employees might resent what they see as a frivolous expense. If you don’t have a celebration, others might feel that they’re being penalized. Arlene Vernon, president of HRx Inc., an Eden Prairie, Minn.-based human resources consultancy, says it’s a good idea to celebrate the company’s successes – which means, after all, the employees’ successes – and so a holiday observance can be entirely appropriate. Even in a company where there have been layoffs, owners “have to still honor the people that are there,” Vernon said. “Those people still want to feel like they have a home, like they’re appreciated.” last_img read more

Domestic double a success – Terry

first_imgChelsea captain John Terry says winning the Premier League and Capital One Cup would make this season an undoubted success.Hopes of a second Champions League title disappeared following the midweek home draw with Paris St-Germain and subsequent aggregate defeat. But Terry has said the European exit will act as an incentive for the 11-game Premier League run-in, starting with Southampton on Sunday.“It makes us hungrier,” Terry told the club website. “The manager said if we can win the Capital One Cup and the Premier League it will have been a very successful season.“We’re a few points clear and there is still an awful lot to do but it’s in our hands. There is enough experience in the squad to rally around and get everyone going again.”Chelsea are five points clear of second-placed Manchester City and have a game in hand.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebooklast_img read more

SA, Kazakhstan to strengthen ties

first_img8 October 2013 South Africa and Kazakhstan will be looking to strengthen their ties when Deputy International Relations Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim hosts Kazakhstan’s deputy foreign minister, Kairat Sarybay, in Pretoria on Thursday. Sarybay will be in South Africa on a one-day working visit, during which he will co-chair the 3rd round of inter-governmental consultations between the two countries Top of the agenda, according to the Department of International Relations and Cooperation, will be a review of progress on draft agreements to be signed during the planned state visit of the president of Kazakhstan in December. South Africa and Kazakhstan’s interests overlap in areas including trade, the production and collaborative marketing of strategic minerals, technology exchanges, machine production, as well as oil procurement for South Africa. Total trade between South Africa and Kazakhstan has been fluctuating, but has remained in South Africa’s favour since 2009. It increased from R44-million in 2009 to R137-million in 2010, dropped to R88-million in 2011 and increased to R90-million in 2012. Exports increased from R42-million in 2009 to R101-million in 2010 compared to imports of R2-million in 2009 and R36-million in 2010. In September 2009, South Africa’s second micro-satellite, SumbandilaSat, was launched from Kazakhstan. Before a blast of solar radiation put it out of commission by damaging its on-board computer in July 2011, SumbandilaSat delivered over 1 000 very usable, cloud-free images, and became well-known by the amateur radio satellite society worldwide for the excellent results from its amateur radio payload. Denel Spaceteq, the newly launched space engineering unit of aerospace and defence manufacturer Denel, has started the initial work on South Africa’s third low-orbit satellite, a multispectral, high-resolution earth observation satellite called EO-Sat1. Bee.tv Recommendation Engine for TV and Film

first_imgcurt hopkins Tags:#Recommendation Engines#web “Bee.tv employs a proprietary algorithm that includes contextual and semantic analysis, collaborative filtering, and thematic push to deliver personalized TV, movie and video content recommendations.” I signed up for the beta and was interested to see if my weird taste in TV and movies would track at all. I like Blazing Saddles, Chuck, The Beekeeper, Erich Rohmer, Rick Steves, Cracked.com and A Blog About History, so heaven only knows what they’d make of that. You chime in on eight movies from Superbad to Casablanca. I wound up with The Bourne Supremacy (sure), Observe and Report (eh, probably not) and All Through the Night (never heard of it). It didn’t blow my mind but it wasn’t crazily out of the park either. Presumably, as I use the service, and rate more offerings, the engine will hone in on my weirdness and before you know it, voila! Kentucky Fried Movie and Cities in the Mist. Recommendations are broken into TV, Web, Mobile and iPad. A recommendation filtering mechanism can monitor your preferences. YouTube and most online video viewing sites have recommendation algorithms, but Bee.tv is a stand-alone site, with an emphasis on the recommendation process. The site provides you with a place to purchase each of its recommendations that are for sale, but unlike Hulu, say, it does not seem to be a platform for free programming. Bee.tv’s partners include Apple, YouTube, Tribune Media, Amazon, broadcast and cable networks and various online content creators. LeBron James Youngest in NBA History With 20000 Points

LeBron James became the youngest player in NBA history with 20,000 points Wednesday night, and, barring injury, it will be just one of many milestones to come for the Miami Heat superstar widely regarded as the best player in the world.James authored a gem in leading the Heat’s 92-75 blowout victory over the Golden State Warriors: 25 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds in just 30 minutes in securing his latest piece of history.James’ short jumper with 2:45 left in the second quarter was the history-making play. The previous youngest to score 20,000 points was Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant,  who was 29 years, 122 days old. James was 28 years, 17 days on Wednesday.“It means everything,” James said. “It means a lot. First of all, like I continue to say, it means I’ve been able to be healthy. To be out on the floor and do what I love to do, I love the game of basketball and I try to give everything to the game. And hopefully it continues to give back to me.”In the first quarter, James also found Wade for his 5,000th career assist. He is the 13th player with 20,000 points and 5,000 assists.James eclipsed both marks before halftime and helped Miami go ahead by 34 points in the third quarter. Dwyane Wade added 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists and Mario Chalmers scored 15 for the Heat, who had lost three of their last four road games. The Warriors, who beat the Heat 97-95 in Miami on Dec. 12, lost consecutive games for only the third time this season. Clearly, James and Co. went into the game focused on making amends for that defeat.“Disappointing, but we faced a team that remembered what took place in South Beach and came with a mindset to make a point, individually and collectively,” Warriors coach Mark Jackson said. “That’s what great players do.” read more
