ST. LOUIS – Freshman Libby Helverson (West Des Moines, Iowa) of the Drake University women’s soccer team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Newcomer of the Week, the MVC office announced Monday, Oct. 22. Helverson, who led the team with five shots against the Sycamores, has played in all 16 matches in her first season as a Bulldog. This is the third MVC Newcomer of the Week winner for Drake as fellow freshman Alison Walls (Kansas City, Mo.) is a two-time recipient. Helverson and her teammates host Missouri State Thursday at 4 p.m. in the regular season finale. Print Friendly Version Helverson, a midfielder, was the hero in Drake’s win over Indiana State Sunday, scoring her first career goal in a 3-2 comeback win. Helverson’s game-winner was a golden goal in the 95th minute. It came after junior Shelley Lyjak’s took a shot and the Sycamores’ goalkeeper, Hannah Sullivan, was unable to hold onto the ball. Helverson was in the right spot as she tapped it in for the winner for the Bulldogs.
